A pprincipal walks across a school playground and sees Johnny “king hit” Billy and knock him out. “Right. Into my office! I saw what you did. You are expelled from the school!“ “But Sir, Billy was about to shoot another student with a gun. If I didn’t knock him out my friend could have been murdered!” “Ahhh… why didn’t you say so earlier? You are a hero! Thank you. You’re not expelled.”
Now what happened? Johnny’s behaviour was “justified”.
Was the behaviour changed? No, only the Principal’s view of the behaviour changed. Romans 5:1 says: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It’s not repenting of the sin making us feel guilty, that is the key issue for the Christian; it is repenting for the reason why we don’t think that sin has been “justified”, that needs the constant work.
