There are two ways to bend metal. The easy way and the hard way.
The hard way is to take a steel pipe and try bend it over your knee. That’s what we call external conformity.
The easy way is to melt it and pour it into any shape you like.
The human heart can be affected same way. Religion says: bend your external behaviours into patterns you deem to be “acceptable”, both societally and hopefully by God. That’s external conformity.
The Gospel says, reflect on what Jesus Christ has done for you, and allow the beauty and the power of His unconditional acceptance melt your heart. Christians now obey not because we have to, but because we want to. That’s called inner transformation.
What is your approach to the Christian life this week…external conformity or inner transformation? Are you trying to bend your heart into shape, or melt it?
