2016 is already upon us and so are the pressures to write down our New Year’s resolutions, set goals and have dreams for the year ahead.
There’s this external pressure for 2016 to be your best yet. It’s like a presumption that whatever has happened in the past, you don’t need to worry as 2016 is here. You stay up late to eagerly count down the start of a new year, get absorbed in the fireworks and fanfare and what do you know, it’s a new year. But you see, if you’re anything like me it’s all too easy to let the past slip by. I tend to ignore it and not spend time sitting with God and abiding in Him. I all too often forget to reflect and I chose instead to just move on.
So, is it a new year, new you? For me, it’s a different year but same you, same God. Still the same bad habits, the same struggle to read the Word, pray for those around me, love the poor and live out my faith. But Jesus says in John 8:31-32 “If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” I personally need to commit this year ahead to abiding in God, remaining in His Word and letting the truth resonate within me.
This year what would it look like for you to remain in the Word and live out of the certainty it gives you?
When you read the Word which is truth and encounter the living God in the Word, you will be led by the Spirit into all truth.
