Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden”. Have you ever been to Barcelona? It’s an incredible city with culture and art to overwhelm the senses; a must-visit for any European trip.
The concept of a ‘city on a hill’ was brought to life for me when I visited Barcelona in 2011 and its infamous cathedral – the Sagrada Familia. It was intentionally positioned on a hill, so that boats would see the spectacular church with its lavish design as they drew in to the harbour.
There are many timeless cathedrals positioned on ‘hilltops’ throughout Europe. And every time no matter where you stand in the village or town, you’re always under the presence of the ‘city’ on a hill. Its presence pervades all who live amongst it. It stands firm, graceful, resolute and provides an anchor for the city. A light that always shines.
Today, just as throughout history, our society moves up and down in intensity and furore with public debate on issues of the day. And at times, the church has fallen out of favour with the current popular culture of the day.
Yet just like the centuries old cathedral, even though the world around it has changed, it still stands. It weathers the storm. It shines it’s light and it is a place for all to come home.
Are you ready to shine, firefly?
How are you providing a city on a hill to those in your community right now? Are you resolute and firm, a consistent shining light – a place to welcome someone home? It can be tricky trying to keep the light burning on your own. You know we’re better together? You will let your light gather in strength and intensity by standing in community together. So let’s encourage each other, join in community and build each other up and together we’ll form a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
